Field planting/field digging bonsai stock.

I have been busy replacing the bonsai stock that has been dug out of the ground.  Now is still a good time to dig out trees out of the field.  The window of opportunity to dig is quickly closing.  It is usually optimal to dig out field grown bonsai stock by tax time(April 15th).  There is still plenty of nice field grown pines, junipers, maples and quinces still available.  I have recently been replacing the pines that I have dug out with the air-layered  pines that I took last year.  It is amazing how fully rooted the pines become in such a short period of time.  I am blogging now to take a break from the heat of the day.  The mornings have been cool but the temperatures climb quickly.  We should be in the upper 70’s today.  Well enough of a break already, its back to work for me….

Would it be possible for you to post a guide to this air-layering process the way you do it? With pictures if possible.

  • Matt, If you go to May of last year and look at the blog, I have explained the air-layer process and included photo's. George

thanks so much …do you add any sand to the moss? I read in Naka's book to use a mixture.

My other question is on candle pruning. Naka seems to say that you should prune any candle that is longer than 1 inch in the spring. But this seems to be for finished bonsai. He also states to remove the strongest bud from the top branches to leave the two weaker buds, and do the opposite for the lower branches …..

I am just confused about what to do with a finished bonsai v. training a bonsai for thicker trunk etc ….

If that makes no sense then I will just stop by and we will discuss it.

    thanks
