I have discovered your web site just recently and very much enjoy your detailed documentation of your life working in your bonsai nursery.
One thing that really caught my attention was your successful black pine air layering technique. I’ve got to try it. I have only two or three in the ground with long strong shoots to work with. I’ll start this spring. Thanks!
I’m sure your warmer climate allows you to do things we in the cooler/wet Seattle area can only dream of, but I’ll give it a try.
I did one air layer once of a black pine that worked pretty good. The upper part was good, but the base was really ugly. I wraped two loops of wire around the trunk where I wanted roots to grow and twisted it tight. I then tied on some wet moss around the wire then covered the area with soil. After that I didn’t do anything special. It took a long time to produce enough roots so I could remove it and pot it up on it’s own.
Thank you for giving me some ideas.
