Nice weather for working!
February 5, 2011 7:58 pm 1 CommentToday was another hectic day. I began the day by replanting some trident maples. I changed out last years soil for my new blend of soil for the pre-bonsai trees. The new mix consists of lava cinders(lava rock that is 3/8 inch and smaller. Pumice 3/8 inch and smaller. The third component is called birdseye and looks like small grits of sand of differing color. All three blended in equal parts. I have been using this mix over the last several weeks and the plants seem to like it. I also dug out more trees to fill out my bonsai benches. I dug out several Japanese black pines. I also dug out trident maples and Chinese quince. I dug out approximately 40 trees today and my bonsai benches still look empty. The weather was perfect today. It was in the mid 70’s with a slight breeze. You can not ask for better weather. This pattern is suppose to be the same for another week. I also worked on transplanting trees and fixing trees for customers. One was a dead procumbens juniper that was suppose to be a windswept. I replaced the tree with the same type of tree. Except my tree looks much better than what was in the pot. The other tree is a lavender starflower that is over 20 years old and looks like a stick. A lady dropped it off and wanted me to transplant the tree into a larger pot. The tree was in a pot that was about 2 1/2 inches square. No wonder the plant was so small. When I took the tree out of the pot, the tree was definitely root bound. I combed out the roots and put it into its new pot. I also spent time wiring the tree. I also had a few customers today. I helped one young lady pick out a Chinese elm for her husband to work on. The other customer bought several junipers to keep himself busy. I am glad tomorrow is Sunday, I need a day off before another hectic week begins. I added two pictures of the windswept tree for the customer. The rock you see in the picture was just sitting in the pot. I thought I would incorporate the rock in the design. The black pot was also not my choice, that was the pot that the dead tree was in.
