Update on air – layers pines for 2010

I removed 4 more air – layered pines that I did this year.  This year I used bonsai soil in the 4 inch cups.  First I removed the bark for the air – layer.  Then I put the 4 inch cup around the air – layer.  I put moss on the bottom of the cup so that the soil would not fall out.  I then placed bonsai soil in the middle and covered the top of the bonsai soil with moss, so that the soil would not wash away.  The result is that I lost a few air – layers early because I did not water the air – layers often enough.  The air – layers done in this manner dry out much faster that using just the moss.  However, the results were phenomenal.  The root mass was tremendous.  I have included photos of the roots and the base of the roots to show the growth.  If you want a close up of any of the pictures, click onto the photo.  I will report on my new method of air – layers next year.
